Karma Thoughts - The Blog of Cards, Candles & Karma

Goodbye WoolworthsPosted on 12:00am Tuesday 6th Jan 2009 ![]() Woolworths served it's last customers today as it's 100 year presence on the high street came to a sad end. Has one of the partners in Cards, Candles & Karma I spent many years in the 80's and 90's working for the once giant of the high street and it is a sad day for me, I have been watching over the past weeks how this once great store disapeared so quickly and so undignified being ripped apart fixture by fixture.
I still believe Woolies could have been saved in one form or another and not enough was done to save it, there are a lot of people to blame for this end. Losing woolies is like losing an old friend to many people and that's how I feel today.
I particularly feel sorry for the 27,000 staff who for the past few weeks have been putting on smiles and keeping the tills ringing, some have over 30 years service and these are the people for whom Woolworths was not just a job but a way of life. I salute these people who have remained committed right to the very end.
Woolworths was not a symbol of the pitiless greed that has driven us into recession.
For many generations, Woolworths has been a cornerstone of working class life in this country, and if we can watch it go without sadness, then there is something wrong with us. I understand all the reasons for the passing of Woolies. It came from a time when people didn't go to giant, soulless shopping centres. A time when many families did not have cars. A time when you shopped on your local high street. That was the era of Woolworths - a time when Britain was a poorer, more modest and less aspirational place. When we all had a lot less and we were all far more content than we are today. From all of us at Cards, Candles & Karma
Good Luck to each and everyone of the staff and
